LUKA PARKER
Also known as WHATSGOOD, Luka is a Brooklyn-based documentarian and multi-media artist and musician with Siren Empire. Representing both Youngstown, OH and Yonkers, NY, his work involves digital (including miniDV) and film (including Super 8).
He’s also the in-house photographer and videographer for For The Gworls and Siren Empire Entertainment.
His work focuses on the multitudes that can be found in the simplicity of an artistic subject: What’s beautiful about the everydayness of it? What’s captivating about it? What story is being told once it is photographed? How does that story shift once the medium (ex: digital vs film) shifts? How can we focus on and highlight the details in something someone might not have taken a second glance at? His work is an intervention because it focuses on the authenticity of the moment versus staged beauty because he recognizes the beauty in a moment being captured as it is, not as we deem it should be.
Luka is deeply invested in rendering Black trans histories accessible by virtue of showing that these subjects and moments are everyday histories. As a Black trans man (pronouns he/him), Luka’s art simultaneously answers the question of what it means to juxtapose the nowness of Black queerness with the futurity of that very same thing in all of its possibilities – be it a Black trans subject at a party, or someone walking around his rapidly-changing hometown of Yonkers.
